The AUA is proud to present two free sessions as part of LGBTQ+ History Month, free and open to both AUA members and non-members!

LGBTQ+ History Month takes place every February and is the perfect opportunity to focus on LGBTQ+ narratives and celebrate LGBTQ+ history and culture as we continue the fight for equality. This year, we look ‘Behind the Lens’ and listen to LGBTQ+ peoples’ lived experiences.

From the Closet to Pride Experiences of a gay man in UK Higher Education

LGBT History Month is marked across the UK throughout February as an opportunity to connect and reflect on the past and present of the LGBT Community, celebrate LGBT culture and progress towards equality over time, and to explore what the lessons of history can teach us for the future. In this session Ian will reflect on his own experiences and journey as Gay Man in UK Universities as a “closeted” student to be an “out” gay member of staff. The session will include a variety of activities and discussion groups around the themes of inclusion and support networks.

This workshop is relevant to a variety of professionals across the sector including those who are new to sector, general administration, mid-level management and senior management.

By the end of this session, delegates will be able to:

• Develop an awareness of the discrimination and challenges experienced by the LGBT+ community.
• How to be a better LGBT+ ally by embedding inclusivity into your work and daily life
• How to develop/sustain a LGBT+ staff network in your organization.

Tuesday 7 February

Gender in academic and semi-academic circles

In this session, Gali (She/Her) will talk frankly about her lived experience working as a trans woman and discuss gender in academic and semi-academic circles. Gali’s talk will be followed by a Q&A, providing a non-judgmental environment for participants to have an open discussion about the issues explored.

This session aims to increase confidence and familiarity around trans identities, which can be applied to your work when creating a positive experience for trans students and staff in higher education.

This workshop is relevant to a variety of professionals across the sector, including those who are new to the sector, general administration, mid-level management and senior management.
