This interactive lunchtime webinar will explore practical, evidence-based strategies that higher education professionals can implement to enhance student well-being and engagement. Helena Lim

Academic Lead

About Helena

Dr Helena Lim is Academic Lead at evasys. Helena has held senior roles in the UK higher education sector for more than 25 years, and has lectured at Solent, University of Bath and the Open University. She has held Honorary Fellowships with the University of Liverpool and Aberystwyth University. As a teaching and research academic, Helena has extensive experience working with universities to enhance student experience and has put in place institutional approaches to gathering and analysing data in universities across the UK, and is currently Educational Excellence Lead at Queen Mary University of London. 

David Gilani

Head of Student Engagement and Advocacy

About David

David works at Middlesex University as their Head of Student Engagement and Advocacy leading on their efforts to engage both current students and alumni. Having started his career as a students’ union officer, he is a strong proponent of the student voice and in 2012 he founded the Student Publication Association, which supports student journalists across the UK and Ireland. He believes strongly in universities working together to support student engagement efforts, and so co-chairs the CASE Student Communications conference and leads AHEP’s Student Experience and Engagement Network.

David has also just finished studying for his PhD at the University of York on the topic of student belonging.

Janette Nhangaba

About Janette

Janette is currently serving as Director of Student Services at the Said Business School, The University of Oxford.  She brings a wealth of experience in education, holistic support services and intercultural approaches rooted in participation and partnership.  Janette adopts a transdisciplinary approach, moving in the space between professional disciplines and identities to understand and address complex problems with real life impact.  Her interests and work focus on the student experience, the development of intercultural worldviews, and shaping responsive, high-quality and transformative learning environments. 

Janette provides leadership to a range of student-centred academic and student services at the School, drawing on her experiences in diverse Higher Education and educational settings, and contemporary best practices across the wider University and the sector.  

Emily McIntosh

Director of Student Success

University of the West of Scotland

About Emily

Dr Emily McIntosh has held a variety of leadership roles in learning, teaching and the student experience in several UK universities.  She joined the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) as Director of Student Success in January 2023.  Emily is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (PFHEA, 2017) and a National Teaching Fellow (NTF, 2021).  She is an Executive Member & Trustee of the Heads of Educational Development (HEDG) group and an Independent Board Member of Trafford & Stockport College Group (TSCG).  Emily has published widely on a variety of topics from academic advising, personal tutoring and peer learning to integrated practice.
