How long have you worked in HE and what was your first position?

Just over 20 years (wow…until writing this I had no idea it had been so long!). I started working at The University of Manchester’s Sport and Recreational centre when I was 18.

My first job was a Leisure Attendant working face to face with students, staff and members of public to help with the day-to-day running of the busy sports facility (which was actually the home of the Commonwealth Games back in 2002). My first role at the AUA was front of house Administrative Assistant, progressing to Communications and Events Administrator then onto Third Party Services and Communications Officer and I now oversee most of AUA’s events as the Events Officer.

How has the AUA helped your career/development?

Before I started working at the AUA, managerial guidance on how to progress and develop yourself was never really discussed. My role was purely reacting to whatever the day threw at you and I would arrive at work not knowing what lay in store and would crack on with the job at hand. AUA however is very different. The underpinning ethos is about personal and professional development and a collective approach to improving yourself and those around you. Since working at AUA my job role has changed numerous times which I think demonstrates exactly how the AUA can help if you engage and ask questions.

What do you value most about working in HE?

The diversity and mix of people you meet. I cannot think of a more inclusive sector to work in or be part of!

What can’t you start your day without?

Coffee! I honestly could not survive without numerous caffeine hits each day!

What work accomplishment are you the most proud of?

Being responsible for coordinating the AUA Annual Conference and Exhibition is something that makes me hugely proud. It involves a massive amount of planning and so many people contribute at various stages it’s really quite hard to quantify the collective input required to make it happen. Its hard work but worth every second when you see it all come together.

What is your personal philosophy?

Be kind to people. It costs nothing and you never know what other people are dealing with.

Where is your favourite place to be?

Having a snooze in bed on a Saturday morning with my wife, 2 little girls and dog asleep at the end of the bed. It’s my most favourite time of the week as we have a family lie-in before heading downstairs for a relaxed breakfast together sat round the dining room table (usually eating blueberry pancakes with a drizzle of maple syrup). Perfect!
