About this session
The Guardian published their annual rankings on 13th September with the Sunday Times/Times on the weekend of the 22nd. There has been significant volatility this year in the Guardian and Times/Sunday Times this month and in the Complete University Guide published in June 2025.
We all know how important rankings and league tables are externally and internally. At a time of increased uncertainty for UK Higher Education, proof points and affirmation matter more than ever.
Why attend?
Join the session to gain insights, understanding and take action for your institution!
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, delegates will be able to:
1. Better understand the variables and levers for UK rankings
2. Scope next steps for your institution and data, marketing and senior colleagues
3. Understand the wider opportunities and implications of qualitative and quantitative measures
Session format
1. Welcome & Context
• Why rankings matter for UK HE (recruitment, reputation, staff recruitment), Current volatility in Guardian / Times/Sunday Times – what it means for institutions
2. Demystifying the Rankings

3. Risks and Opportunities
• Examples of volatility: how a small shift in one metric can change position, Where institutions often go wrong (data quality, missed deadlines, misaligned messaging), Practical “quick wins” versus longer-term strategic plays
4. Communicating Rankings
• How to frame results internally (staff, governors, students), How to handle external comms (press, digital, stakeholders) – celebrating vs. damage limitation, Case examples of effective messaging
5. Wrap-Up & Q&A
