About this Symposium

Empowering Professionals, Empowering Students

In response to the growing importance of student well-being, mental health, and inclusivity within higher education, we are delighted to present our upcoming transformative one-day online symposium focusing on “Empowering the Student Experience: Navigating Challenges with Integrity and Inclusivity.” Inspired by recent legal precedents such as the Natasha Abrahart case, this symposium delves into critical issues surrounding student well-being, support services, legal considerations, and empowerment strategies within higher education institutions. Through engaging presentations, interactive workshops, and insightful panel discussions, participants will explore the vital role they play in fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all students. By examining lessons learned from legal cases and other relevant contexts, attendees will gain valuable insights, practical tools, and inspiration to enhance their professional practice and empower the student experience.

As an organisation committed to advancing professional development and best practices for HE professionals within the sector, we recognise the critical role that HE professionals play in supporting and enhancing the student experience. With a vibrant Student Experience and Engagement Special Interest Group and a burgeoning Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Special Interest Group, we have seen firsthand the increasing interest and demand among our members for discussions around student well-being, mental health, and disability support. Feedback from our conference delegates has further underscored the need for events that provide practical insights and strategies into supporting the student experience for professionals operating in both student and non-student facing roles. Therefore, this symposium aims to address these pressing issues head-on, providing a platform for knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and empowerment. We believe that by coming together to explore these topics, we can equip our community with the tools and resources needed to create more inclusive and supportive environments for all students, thereby enriching the higher education experience for everyone involved.

– Understand the pivotal role higher education professionals play in empowering the student experience, fostering inclusivity, and promoting student well-being within their respective roles and departments.

– Explore best practices, innovative approaches, and ethical considerations in student support services, academic quality assurance, registry management, and other key areas, with a focus on enhancing the overall student experience.

– Develop strategies for effective collaboration and communication among higher education professionals from diverse backgrounds, recognising and valuing individual contributions, and working together to create positive and lasting impacts on student success

This symposium is part of our Professional Framework series of symposia and whilst it covers multiple aspects of the AHEP Professional Framework, it most closely aligns with Professional Commitment #2: Demonstrating Responsible Practice and Personal Integrity.

Here’s why:

– Upholding high ethical standards and demonstrating personal integrity aligns with the symposium’s focus on fostering inclusivity and fairness in higher education, particularly in supporting students with disabilities and mental health challenges.

– Building positive relationships and trust within the higher education community is essential for creating more inclusive and supportive environments, which is a key aspect of responsible practice.

– Advocating for equity, diversity, and inclusion, as well as promoting fairness and respect for all, resonates with the symposium’s objective of enhancing the student experience and ensuring that all students have equal opportunities to succeed.

Overall, the symposium’s emphasis on ethical standards, inclusivity, and professionalism closely aligns with the principles of Demonstrating Responsible Practice and Personal Integrity.

We look forward to welcoming you to this event.
